Ate lunch with my buddy Rich today. He’s a cop who works the beat in Toronto, and I mean the downtown core. He’s been on the force for 25 years and he’s seen a lot.
Rich likes the idea of Rejection Therapy. He thinks people stress about the wrong things, and that we should be living moment to moment.
He sees a lot of death in his line of work. The top three causes of death Rich comes across are 1) heart attack and stroke 2) cancer and 3) suicide. He’s seen a dead guy with his face buried in a bowl of Cheerios. People dead on the toilet. People dead in the strangest places you could imagine.
“When your time is up, your time is up” he said, shrugging his shoulders.
Judging by the many dead people Rich has encountered on the job, death comes unexpectedly. Death doesn’t care if you look dignified or not. It won’t wait until every thing on your bucket list is crossed off. It doesn’t care if you’re young or old, ready or not.
That’s why Rich doesn’t understand why people stress over the future so much. Reality is, you and I may not be around for long. You could have a stroke tomorrow morning and drown in your Cheerios.
Live for today, Rich says. Don’t leave it for tomorrow. You may not have one.
